It’s not often a Q&A page on a website is the place to go for a quick laugh, but when it comes to Broad Comedy, pretty much everything the female-focused ensemble does is designed to elicit a visceral reaction.

To wit, when asking if people should book Broad Comedy for their next big event, the clever reply to the question is twofold. “Answer: Are you a women’s health clinic, a liberal political organization, a college, or basically any corporation that doesn’t open your meetings with a group prayer that Obamacare is repealed? Yes, you should.

“Are you a conservative country club, or an abstinence-only textbook publisher?” the query continues. “No, you probably should not.”

When Broad Comedy returns to Bellingham Thurs., Jan. 24 at Four Points by Sheraton to celebrate the 46th anniversary of Roe v. Wade and raise funds for Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood, they’ll be playing to a crowd that is likely already onboard with their propensity to use song, dance, satire and the occasional F-bomb to draw attention to bigger issues such as bodily autonomy, homophobia, politics and feminism.

For example, in headliner and creator Katie Goodman’s song “Sorry Babe, You’re a Feminist,” the fiercely funny performer manages to reference everything from voting rights (“past feminists gave their lives to let you vote and be more than wives”) to getting attacked by “misogynist dickheads” for simply posting your own opinion online, to the fact that it’s pretty easy for men to be feminists, too.

“A feminist is described as a person who believes in social, political and economic equality of the sexes,” Goodman croons while playing along on the piano. “Why is this so confusing?”

In other words, if you find the phrase “feminist comedy” to be frightening, you’ll want to stay at home with your head in the sand. If you see it as an enticement, however, you’ll rush to procure tickets to see songs and skits such as “The United States Extreme Right Cheerleading Squad,” “Probably Gay: The Homophobia Song,” “MILF,” “ICE ICE Baby,” “Boobs Look Funny When You’re Having Sex,” and “An Appeal to Conservatives.”

Goodman and company have making people laugh—and think—since 2001, so it’s a safe bet to say that when they roll through town to raise money for and draw attention to Planned Parenthood’s mission of providing reproductive and complementary health care services in settings that preserve and protect the essential privacy and rights of each individual, it’ll be well worth your time.

With federal funding for Planned Parenthood at constant risk due to the many misguided policies of the current presidential administration, there’s never been a better time to support the organization that, for many women and men, depend on them as their main source of health care. If you can laugh while doing so, your philanthropy will be all the sweeter.

Black's Back
The joke’s on us

When asked if he thinks Donald Trump is the worst or best thing to ever happen to comedians, standup star Lewis Black didn’t pause before saying he thinks the sitting president is “good for comedy in the way that strokes are good for a nap.”

Lewis notes he’s had the same answer since the…
