Rumor Has It

Fundraising and Family Time:

Wednesday, November 27, 2019

This is not the first time I’ve talked about the Bellingham Alternative Library’s upcoming move from its home at the Karate Church at East Maple and High streets to a yet-to-be-determined location, and it probably won’t be the last.

The folks at the nonprofit, volunteer-run operation are trying to raise $20,000 to fund their relocation and their move-out date is just a few weeks away. At this point, they’re a little more than $16,000 away from that goal.

So fundraise they must, which is the purpose of a Nov. 30 event at the space. The emphasis of the benefit is to focus on community connection and looking toward the future, and all are welcome whether their pockets are deep or slightly shallower than that. Bring your bidding chops because there will be silent auction prizes aplenty, as well as merch from local artists and wine and beer for purchase.

The entertainment portion of the evening will be handled by Seattle cellist and composer Lori Goldston, who is known to many of us from her touring stints with Nirvana and time in drone pioneers Earth. She’ll be joined by dancers from Bellingham Repertory Dance, who will contribute their contemporary choreography to the affair.

A word: If you need a really on-the-nose, up-close-and-personal example of what makes the Alternative Library so valuable to our arts community, the pairing of Goldston with BRD is certainly it. Goldston has made the all-ages cooperative her venue of choice over several visits—a stamp of approval that bears some distinction—and while other performance spots would host this program of experimental music and modern dance, it’s hard to imagine one that would suit more perfectly than the Alternative Library. If you can’t make it to the fundraiser, you can contribute via the venue’s Gofundme.

Lastly, for those of you who might need it, here’s a not-at-all comprehensive list of downtown Bellingham watering holes that will be open and ready to pour you libations to chase your turkey dinner with should you need to escape your family on Thanksgiving: Boundary Bay Brewery (Thanksgiving in the taproom begins at 11am), Firefly Lounge (where Robert Blake and Meg Yates will perform), Rumors Cabaret (open at 2pm), Uisce Irish Pub (6pm), Cap Hansen’s (8pm), Redlight (4pm), Culture Cafe (12pm)—I’m sure there are others, but that should get you started. If you’re reading this after Thanksgiving and are bummed the info is no longer useful, take heed that many of these same places will also be open on Christmas.
