Over the years, I’ve expended a fair number of words talking about Craig Jewell. As the owner of the Wild Buffalo as well as a person who is constantly up to just about anything, he’s given me a lot to say.
A happy side effect is that during the time I’ve been writing about him, Craig and I have become friends, and so I’ve gotten to know other folks in his life, which has led me to write about his business partners, friends and a fair number of the citizens in the village it takes to keep his show on the road.
However, one person I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned is his girlfriend Kelsey Wylie.
For the past six years, Kelsey has been a steadfast and steadying presence in Craig’s life. Sometimes she’s his co-conspirator in the many, many antics he involves himself in. Sometimes she’s the voice of reason offering him valuable perspective. Very often, she’s just along for the ride.
No matter what, she’s by his side. Always. It’s easy to see her love for him in her unfailing support of him.
It’s also easy to see what Craig loves in Kelsey. After all, she’s smart, kind, funny and easy to be around—general qualities that describe both of them.
But to Craig, she’s so much more. She’s the person who accepts his life, with all of its crazy hours, late nights, big personalities and high stakes, countering those things with stability and support. At the same time, she’s dedicated to her own career, and her innate hardworking nature and devotion to a job well done not only motivates Craig, but also makes Kelsey the right partner for someone similarly hardworking and motivated. Her sense of devotion also extends to family—including those people she’s chosen as family—and everyone in Craig’s life has benefitted from her warm and genuine nature.
Like so many things, love often lives in the details, and so it is with Craig and Kelsey. “She puts up with my late hours,” he says, “me singing Tom Petty songs in the shower (two times a day, five songs each), and makes me dinner every single night because I can’t cook.”
And when it comes to how Kelsey fits into his big picture, Craig is clear. “She’s absolutely everything to me and there is no way that I would be able to exist without her.”
Which brings me to the matter at hand. As you might have surmised, this column has been building up to something. As to what that something might be, well, this is where Craig takes over—away from this page and in his real life with Kelsey. Stay tuned for further details.
