Dig It

A season for seeds

Wednesday, January 30, 2019

Last Sunday, I spent a few hours in the garden doing what can best be described as drudge work—pulling weeds, spraying down chicken poop, pruning overgrown sage and oregano plants, and organizing an excessive array of plastic planters. And although I was stiff at the end of the day and had held off on planting any seeds or bulbs in the ground—it is still midwinter, after all—I was thrilled to see almost-budding snowdrops, nascent daffodil stems and other signs of spring making themselves known.

If you’re a gardener who’s also itching to get started on the season, a number of events happening in the near future may satiate the urge to dig in the dirt. First off, a Winter Gardening and Soil Basics workshop taking place from 4-6pm Wed., Feb. 6 and 10am-12pm Sat., Feb. 9 at the Blaine Library will focus on how to get a jump on the growing season. At the events, Blaine C.O.R.E. (Community Orchards for Resources and Education) will be on hand to discuss simple hoop-house construction and what can be grown in it with passive protection. Additionally, planting tables will be available to help guide with seed buying. The experts will also be in attendance at Garden Design classes Feb. 23 and 27, with a focus on how to assess the overall yard—including hardscape assessments, best materials, integration with the home and/or views, sunlight observations, air flow and other major landscaping considerations.  Where: 610 3rd St. Cost: Free. Info: http://www.wcls.org

Green thumbs and wannabes can also learn new things and pick up supplies when Cascadia Skillshare and Barter presents its ninth annual Seed Swap Plus Barter and Skillshare Sat., Feb. 9 at Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship. From 10:30am-3:30pm, attend workshops on everything from seed saving to food preservation, gardening, homesteading and more and, from 1:30-4:30pm, a Seed Swap and Barter Faire will commence. Swappers are encouraged to bring seeds and take home as many as 10 other varieties, and register to swap their homemade items. If you’re still feeling the buzz the upcoming gardening season portends, stick around from 5-8pm for a chili dinner (with a vegan alternative), followed by dancing and classic rock with Bill Sterling and Friends. Where: 1207 Ellsworth St. Cost: $10 (children under 12 are free), plus $6 for dinner. Info: http://www.cascadiaskillshare.org

A seasonal commitment will be needed to sign up for an Advanced Vegetable Gardening series beginning Sat., Feb. 9 and continuing monthly through June 15 at Everson’s Cloud Mountain Farm Center, but it’ll be worth your time. Led by Anne Schwarz of Blue Heron Farm and Mike Finger of Cedarville Farm—the duo have a cumulative total of more than 60 years of vegetable-growing experience in the Pacific Northwest, so you’ll be in good hands—the five-part workshop is designed for intermediate to advanced gardeners looking to increase their background knowledge, refine their skills, and get new ideas and strategies for growing better veggies. Space is limited, so don’t delay. Where: 6906 Goodwin Rd. Cost: $150. Info: http://www.cloudmountainfarmcenter.org

Glued to the oars

I was in her father’s Lummi Island basement crouched awkwardly behind a chest freezer knocking cobwebs into the hose nozzle of an overmatched Shop-Vac when the Lady of the House swooped in to remind me that—contingent to our regular midwinter cabin-cleaning chores—we were still on the…

Romantic outings don’t necessarily need to involve fine dining, bouquets of flowers or the giving and receiving of material things. Sometimes, all that is needed to get your heart racing is an activity that takes place in the great outdoors and involves the appreciation of the natural…
