Night Moves

Art and action after dark

Wednesday, May 17, 2017

At last Friday’s Wine Walk in downtown Bellingham, more than 700 humans purchased tickets to sample grape elixirs and explore 20 unique venues in the urban core. While wine tasting was the official reason for the spring soiree, I heard more than one attendee express amazement at discovering unique finds in a locale they’d never visited before—including at the Comics Place, Bison Bookbinding & Letterpress, and Ormolulu Vintageworks. Read on for three more nontraditional ways to get your fill of Bellingham-based creativity. The art and action takes place when the traditional workday is done, so a good time is guaranteed.

From 6-10pm Fri., May 19, the Commercial Street Night Market will see local craftspeople, artists, entertainers, musicians, food vendors and creative vendors and artisans from around the Pacific Northwest light up the 1300 block of Commercial Street. After two years of presenting seasonal outdoor markets to the masses, the event will now take place on the third Friday of every month through September—with an additional gift-focused market in December. “After three seasons of increasing popularity, we’re excited to make the night market a more permanent fixture for downtown Bellingham,” Lindsey Payne Johnstone of Downtown Bellingham Partnership says. “This event is one of the more unique and urban ways our downtown community comes together.” Info: http://www.downtownbellingham.com

The following week, those who have become addicted to Homeskillet’s mix of amazing food and elbow-to-elbow camaraderie will want to attend Homeskillet Sunnyland Social Club’s inaugural New Moon Night Market from 5-9pm Thurs., May 25 at the eatery’s digs at 521 Kentucky St. In addition to offering dinner service in the main space, the event will sprawl to the covered outdoor lounge, on the grass and in the parking lot, where cocktails, beer, tamales and rice and beans will be served. Works by visual artists Michelle Schutte, Karen Blanquart, and James Mey will also be on display and for sale, as will selections by crafters Arrow Woodworks, Sage Babies, Jaxtone Co-Hammered Jewelry, Goats Coat, Oak Ash Leather, and more. Attendees at the all-ages event can also pick up a Bellingham flag, listen to tunes provided by PHDJ, and get glitter tattoos by Aireekah. While you’re there, take a selfie with Miss Velveeta Jones, the giant painted hen keeping an eye on the shenanigans. More info: http://www.homeskilletsunnyland.com

Finally, Art on Tap: Celebration of Endangered Arts will happen from 6-10pm Fri., June 9 and 12-10pm Sat., June 10 at the Alley District at 929 N. State St. While we don’t have all the details quite yet, word on the street is that the Hub, Altility, Positive/Negative, Plantas Nativas, and others will have to vacate their longtime spaces later this year in order to turn the creative corridor into urban housing. The two-day festival will keep the arts in the public eye via sales by local art vendors, live music, performances, a runway show featuring works by local designers and plenty of food choices. While the loss of the spaces is tough to take, know that a major portion of the funds raised during the celebration will go to help Anu Byal, a Bellingham resident who will be undergoing a full bone marrow transplant in July. Yep, it’s the season

On the last Sunday of October, Whatcom County experienced record-setting warmth that wasn’t exactly commensurate with the season. By the following Sunday, snow was on the ground and it was dark by 5pm—making it much easier to comprehend that Christmas is just around the corner. Following…
