“Far out” is an apt way to describe the latest incarnation of Bellingham Cocktail Week, which takes place Feb. 1-9 at more than 25 venues throughout the city.

This is not only due to the fact that the theme for this year is “Into the Cosmos,” but also because the libations-related lineup goes way beyond the sampling of spirits.

For example, the Good Time Girls will be leading “Boozy Belling-History” tours, and live music, brunch gatherings, trivia contests, poetry readings, educational happenings, cocktail games, tarot readings, “mocktail” events, food specials and much more are also slated to take place.

“I think I always assumed Bellingham Cocktail Week would reflect the rest of what makes our city so unique,” project manager Sara Holodnick says. “While the main focus is on the vibrant cocktail scene, there’s a lot more that goes into that than just booze. We gather over drinks to share food, art, poetry, music, stories and more, so it only made sense to us that Cocktail Week would eventually celebrate those other elements of what a healthy nightlife culture looks like.”

This is Holodnick’s third year co-organizing the citywide celebration, and she says there’s a lot to be excited about, including a two-day Tasting Expo at Hotel Leo—which will feature local and regional distillers showing off their products—a Bartender Challenge, a “Women of the Industry” meet-up, a Cider Education event, and tons of specials for folks who work in the industry. Additionally, a “recovery room” at the Happy Place will feature goods by local artisans and samples of non-alcoholic products not yet available for purchase in Washington.

Holodnick says she and her co-organizers’ schedules leading up to and during Bellingham Cocktail Week are expected to be “bonkers,” but hopes they can carve out time to enjoy the people and places that make the city’s craft cocktail scene a unique one—whether it’s by showcasing locally and regionally produced spirits and ingredients, or via creating “fun and joyful” experiences for their patrons.

For those who might be planning a first date during BCW, Holodnick has a few ideas—including the aforementioned Cocktail Tales tours, the AQUA Brunch at Evolve Chocolate + Cafe, or keeping it easy by grabbing a special at any of the participating bars or restaurants.

“Maybe play a board game and try a Cosmic Background Radiation at Endgame, sample something from the Guide to the Constellations Menu at Mambo Italiano, or play the Choose Your Own Adventure cocktail game at the Back Door Bar,” she says. “Or maybe sample some spirits at the Tasting Expo.

“Man, it feels like there are endless possibilities for first-date plans during Cocktail Week.”
