Last weekend, I slurped savory French onion soup cooked by a friend who’d grown the giant Walla Wallas in her extensive garden plot; ate a delicious slice of blackberry pie sourced from our backyard bumper crop; made a revelatory pasta dish featuring fresh garlic, sun-warmed heirloom tomatoes, just-right zucchinis and chanterelle mushrooms that had been harvested by a pal the day before in a secret forest location near Anacortes; and poured homemade rhubarb shrub into a vodka and fizzy water concoction for a refreshing Sunday sipper.
I hadn’t set out to focus my food and drink consumption on fare that was grown, raised or made in Whatcom and Skagit counties, but with the late-summer harvest season showing off its edible wares around these parts, it was an inevitable outcome when it came to my menu plans.
It makes sense, then, that Sustainable Connections’ is poised to make its annual Eat Local Month one to remember.
Every September, the monthlong celebration of local food reconnects the community to the abundance to be found in Whatcom, Skagit, San Juan, and Island counties via specials at local restaurants, a variety of events designed to get people thinking about where their sustenance comes from, contests and celebrations.
To get in on the action, begin by attending the Community Food Co-op’s seventh annual Farm Celebration—formerly the “Hootenanny”—from 4pm-8pm Sun., Sept. 1 at the beer garden at Boundary Bay Brewery. Attendees can shake it to live music by the Penny Stinkers, enjoy a dance performance by Estrellitas de Bellingham, stick around for farmer recognition and awards, sip beer and nosh on goods from a locally focused barbecue. One hundred percent of the proceeds from donations at the door will directly benefit sustainable, organic food and farming projects in Whatcom and Skagit counties.
The following weekend, Sept. 7-8, the 13th annual Whatcom Farm Tour will see 13 farms swinging open their gates so people can see, taste, feel and learn hands-on what goes into local food production. Whether they’re producing vegetables, beef, pork, eggs and poultry, flowers, dairy, cheese, honey, fruit, farmhouse brew, or yak—yep, you read that right—the featured farmers will take the time to talk about what, and why, they do what the do.
Three locavore experiences will complement the Farm Tour, including a brunch at Cosmos Bistro, a farm-infused beer tasting with Aslan Brewing Co., and a natural wine tasting fête at Camber. If you can’t make those special events, as many as 20 Whatcom County-based restaurants will be using locally sourced fare to concoct $8 and $14 specials throughout September.
Additional Eat Local Month happenings include a Unity Care Eat Local Gala Fri., Sept. 6 at Ciao Thyme, SeaFeast—which takes place Sept. 21-22 at Squalicum Harbor and beyond—and a #FindtheFork contest that foodies will most definitely want to take part in.

Meanwhile, pick up fresh fare at area farmers markets, accept your neighbors’ offerings of extra produce, share your own overflow, and plan as many meals as you can around eating locally. Trust me, it’s an easy goal to achieve.
