Table for Two
Prelude to a kiss

Slackers will want to pay close attention to the following compendium of Bellingham-based eateries offering masterful menus for Valentine’s Day. Your date doesn’t have to know you waited until the last possible second to make a reservation, and you’re more likely to secure a smooch by night’s end.
At B-Town Kitchen & Raw Bar on Lakeway Drive, a Sparkling Wine Dinner being offered from 6pm-9pm Fri.-Sat., Feb. 14-15 is a steal at $99 per couple. Choose from “Leche de Tigre” Colombian-style ceviche or beet salad for the starter, mixed greens or prosciutto di parma for the first course, gulf prawns or champagne-brined pork tenderloin for your main course, and chocolate trifle or fruit sabayon for dessert. Oh, and did we mention each course comes with a different glass of sparkling wine? Rent a room at the Four Points by Sheraton, and make an adult sleepover part of your weekend plans. Throughout February, the Lighthouse Bar & Grill at Hotel Bellwether will be featuring “Lobster Lover” specials daily, so even if you miss out on a Valentine’s Day seating, don’t freak out. It’ll be worth the wait for menu items like Maine lobster bisque, lobster salad, Chateaubriand for two, butter-poached live Maine lobster served with grilled asparagus and pesto-mashed Yukon potatoes, and lobster and beef tenderloin. Pair the fare with that special someone, and you can’t go wrong. Info: http://www.hotelbellwether.com
While we’re not yet privy to all of the dinner and drink specials that can be found on V-Day proper at State Street’s Rock and Rye Oyster House, we do know that a decadent chocolate tart has been created with lovers in mind, and that reservations are highly recommended. We also know that oysters are a well-known aphrodisiac, but not if you can’t make it through the door. Info: http://www.rockrye.com
Romance will also be in the air from 5pm-11pm in Fairhaven at Skylark’s Hidden Cafe, where a dinner special for $29.95 will include a six-ounce filet mignon or pan-seared diver scallops, along with tiramisu for dessert. Feel free to order from the regular menu as well, or show up during happy hour for $4 stuffed mushrooms, $7 scampi prawns, or $6 fancy flatbreads. It’s all good. For Bellinghamsters who don’t feel the need to get dressed up to go out (OK, that’s a large part of the population), keep it casual at La Fiamma Wood Fired Pizza, where sweetheart specials will be offered through Feb. 16 at the Chestnut Street locale. Score a bottle of wine and two-spoon chocolate mousse for $10, make your medium or large pizza heart-shaped for free, sip on blackberry spritz for $7, or add lobster or shaved truffles to your pizza and pasta for $4-$10. Your date will thank you. Info: http://www.lafiamma.com
Since Valentine’s Day is on a Friday, there’s a good chance your other favorite restaurants will also be serving up specials throughout the weekend. But don’t delay when it comes to securing a table for two, as time is running out.

I recently skimmed over a headline on social media that caught my attention—more than all the political posts that I’ve trained myself not to engage with, or the typical click-bait that promises to give me the secret to melt my body fat away. The headline read, “Is the CSA Model…
Drinking the good herb
Few methods of coping with winter are superior to sipping a grapefruit martini. Composed of grapefruit, mint, vodka and sugar, it isn’t your typical martini. In fact, by most martini standards, this drink would be disqualified on multiple counts.
The combination packs a bright pizzazz…
Seek out a slice
I’m always bummed when I realize I’ve once again forgotten International Talk Like a Pirate Day, but this year I plan on being prepared for National Pizza Day, which takes place Sun., Feb. 9 and serves as a swell reason to seek out a slice or three.
In advance of the “holiday,” I sought…
