For those who’ve driven by Greene’s Corner and wondered what the giant white rectangle located smack-dab in the middle of the flower-focused mural on the side of the building was there for, the mystery has now been solved.

Just in time for summer, the restaurant with an outdoor beer garden on James Street recently announced it was introducing “Sunnyland Cinema” with a viewing of the animated film Ratatouille on Sat., June 12 (PLEASE NOTE the event date was changed to Fri., June 18). The rescheduled event will kick off with live music from 8pm-9pm, with the flick being transposed on the painted-on screen starting at 9:30pm.

Things to keep in mind before venturing forth to stake a socially distanced seat in front of the parking lot cinema include the directive that attendees will need to bring their own chairs and blankets, and parking will not be available on the premises. Since the space will temporarily be transformed into an outdoor movie theater, it’ll be a walk-in affair.

Tickets can be purchased at Greene’s the day of the event for a scant $5 per person, and although the kitchen will close at 9pm, beer, wine, snacks and candy will be able to be purchased throughout the film. Ratatouille is a movie you’re not going to want to watch while hungry, so it would behoove you to fill up either before the show, or during it.

The 2007 Academy Award-winning Pixar film is set in a high-end restaurant in Paris, and chefs from both France and the United States were consulted to make sure the delicious meals depicted in the storyline were accurately animated. But that’s only part of the draw. In telling the tale about a young rat named Remy who longs to become a world-class chef and the travails he must go through to do so, the plot touches on everything from friendship to creative license in the kitchen, familial bonds, burgeoning love and more.

An ace voice cast—including Patton Oswalt as Remy, Lou Romano, Ian Holm, Brian Dennehy, Peter O’Toole, Brad Garrett, Janeane Garofalo, Will Arnett, and John Ratzenberger—move the action forward. By the time Remy achieves his dream of running his own kitchen, viewers will be on board with his success.

Although the full Sunnyland Cinema summer lineup hasn’t yet been announced, Ratatouille seems like a swell way to make use of the stationary movie screen. Now that you know what it’s there for, all that remains is to park yourself in front of it and enjoy a night of cinema under the stars.

The original poster for Jaws declared that the movie “may be too intense for younger children,” but Steven Spielberg’s 1975 thriller about a man- and woman-eating great white shark was only rated PG when it first arrived in theaters. I know this because I was under 10 years old when I saw…
